Pada sensus Amerika Serikat tahun 2020, jumlah penduduk kota ini adalah 11.229 jiwa,[12][13] turun sebesar 472 jiwa (−4,0%) dari jumlah penduduk pada sensus tahun 2010 sebanyak 11.701 jiwa,[22][23] yang mencerminkan penurunan sebesar 3.677 (−23,9%) dari 15.378 yang dihitung pada sensus tahun 2000.[24] Pada bulan-bulan musim panas, dengan masuknya wisatawan dan pemilik rumah kedua, diperkirakan terdapat 115.000 hingga 130.000 orang di dalam perbatasan kota.[25][26]

Ocean City berasal dari sebuah borough berdasarkan undang-undang Badan Legislatif New Jersey pada tanggal 3 Mei 1884, dari sebagian Kotapraja Atas, berdasarkan hasil referendum pada tanggal 30 April 1884, dan dimasukkan kembali sebagai sebuah borough pada tanggal 31 Maret 1890. Ocean City didirikan sebagai sebuah kota, bentuk pemerintahannya saat ini, pada tanggal 25 Maret 1897.[27][28] Kota ini diberi nama berdasarkan lokasinya di Samudera Atlantik.[29][30]

Dikenal sebagai resor tepi laut yang berorientasi keluarga, Ocean City tidak mengizinkan penjualan minuman beralkohol dalam batasannya sejak didirikan pada tahun 1879,[31][32] menawarkan bermil-mil pantai yang dijaga, jalan setapak kayu yang membentang sepanjang 2,5 mil (4,0 km), dan kawasan perbelanjaan dan makan di pusat kota.[33]

Travel Channel menilai Ocean City sebagai Pantai Keluarga Terbaik tahun 2005.[34] Pantai ini menduduki peringkat pantai terbaik ketiga di New Jersey pada Kontes 10 Pantai Teratas 2008 yang disponsori oleh Konsorsium Ilmu Kelautan New Jersey.[35] Pada Kontes 10 Pantai Teratas 2009 yang disponsori oleh NJ.com, Ocean City menduduki peringkat pertama.[36]
