English: Phenomena: Volcanoes Satellite: Himawari-9 Product: Sulfur Dioxide (JMA) Instrument: AHI Date/Time: April 29, 2024, 17:50 UTC – April 30, 2024, 12:00 UTC The Himawari-9 satellite, operated by our partners at the Japan Meteorological Agency, monitored sulfur dioxide erupting from the Ruang volcano in Indonesia, then expanding and diffusing throughout the surrounding atmosphere from April 29–30, 2024. The volcano continued with a series of eruptions through the end of April. This image was captured by the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) on Japan’s Himawari-9 satellite. This satellite, the second unit of the Japan Meteorological Agency's (JMA) third-generation of geostationary satellites, provides visible light and infrared images of the Asia-Pacific region. Himawari's data are vital for global geostationary coverage, which is why NOAA and JMA have agreed to mutual back-up arrangements for their geostationary systems.
